Now at the age of 17, still in school and no job, Tokumoto thought that he was not yet ready to live on his own. Chapter 4 Tokumoto drew up a long list of items that he would need to reach the summit of Mt. Fuji: food, backpack, shell jacket and pants, thermal underwear, hiking boots, etc. He then drove and bought them from a store which was located just a few kilometers from his grandfather’s house. It did not take long for Tokumoto to reach the base of Mt Fuji. He vigorously followed the trail for the ascent. At some points, the terrain was rather steep and rocky. Climbing Mt. Fuji was not easy especially in the presence of the blinding rays of the sun, the sudden gust of wind and the falling rocks that he encountered along the way. He struggled with the ascent – it was never ending, very steep and full of horrid stones of all sizes and shapes that gave no grip. One time, Tokumoto slipped and almost fell off the trail. He felt sick as the altitude gets higher and higher. Equipped with sheer courage and determination, he kept going and going until the sun went down. Soon it was dark enough to warrant him wearing his head torch over his beanie. Cold seeped into his tired body. Every bone and muscle in his body ached. He stopped climbing. After dinner of onigiri, curry, and bite-sized fruit that he brought from home, he put up his tent, inflated his portable bed and slept in the midst of the mountain. However, at around 3:30 a.m., he was awakened by a mysterious voice. â€Å"Keep going!† the voice said. Armed with a flashlight, he went out of his tent and bellowed, â€Å"Who’s there?† Nobody answered†¦ Chapter 5 Tokumoto was not able to sleep again. He got himself ready for the final ascent. He started climbing wearing his head torch. The sky was clear and the stars looked so close as he ascended the path that got progressively steeper. Two hours later after a hike through ice crystals, gravel and rocks, he was on the summit. He watched the sunrise as it breaks through the clouds on the horizon and across the bay – not the lovely red, fiery ball of postcards, but something bright and shiny red, squeezed out of a toothpaste tube. Then he noticed something strange: Why was there an underground tunnel in the middle of the summit? Tokumoto was curious so he went inside the tunnel. The walls of the tunnels were like a prism. Everything inside was bright. The place was filled with rats, bugs, snakes, bats, and other frightening animals, and critters. He continued his trek down the tunnel and found a huge clock made of glass. The clock has a diameter of about 30 feet. Both the hour and minute hands were written in Roman numerals and were not moving. As Tokumoto got closer to the center of the clock, he heard faint whispers. Suddenly the clock started ticking and the whisper became louder and louder. Strong winds soon enveloped the cave. The clocked started ticking. After a while, the clock’s face shattered into a million pieces. When all of the debris has settled, Tokumoto found himself wandering in a forest! Chapter 6 Deep within the tranquil reaches of the forest lies a wilderness, vast acres of deep canyons, high cliffs, towering hemlocks, and numerous waterfalls. It is like a maze of canyons and ridge tops, especially during daytime when once cannot see very far. Tokumoto continued to walk. Suddenly, he heard a loud roar and when he turned around, he saw a huge beast ready to strike him. Frightened, he ran as fast as he could but his speed was no much to that of the beast. The beast hit Tokumoto’s chest and feeling hopeless and trapped, Tokumoto tried to trick the beast by pretending to be dead. The beast was about to give him its final blow when out of nowhere, a strange-looking creature with face consisting only of two ears and a mouth appeared and shot the beast with a multitude of arrows. The beast fell to the ground and died. The strange-looking creature approached Tokumoto and introduced himself as Shigori Atamata. â€Å"Thank you for saving my life. Forgive me but why do you only have a mouth and a pair of ears?† Tokumoto asked Shigori. â€Å"Demons have the power to suck away anything they want. Those demons and monsters absorbed my eyes and nose. But by devouring the Book of Many Eyes, I can see. Do not be surprised but I know who you are. I will help you get out of this forest,† Shigori declared. Dry leaves crunched and crackled under his feet as Tokumoto walked in the forest. We are under siege by the demons! Follow me to the armory! Trust your instincts and fight!† Shigori yelled. Tokumoto and Shigori sprinted to an enormous house next to the castle. They slammed the door open, and barged in. Tokumoto found hundreds, if not thousands, of swords, weapons, and books of spells. Tokumoto grabbed a sword, a shield, and a helmet and scurried over to the door. Shigori dashed to a special footlocker and took a long bow, a five-arrow quiver, and an armor set made of steel and ran to Tokumoto. They both jogged to the gates and fought against the demons. Chapter 8 Each of the demons was about 6 feet tall and was armed with an axe. Over at the horizon, there was a portal similar to the one Tokumoto came through. He saw the demons and monsters exit the portal. Tokumoto ran into the fray and sliced and lunged at the demons while parrying, dodging, and blocking the incoming blows. Tokumoto was shocked to know that he was a skilled warrior after all! But this was not enough because the demon forces overpowered him. Along came a sorcerer carrying a staff who was accompanied by about 100 elite soldiers. After uttering a series of incantations, the sorcerer released a ball of fire from the staff and hit the demon who was about to kill Tokumoto. The elite soldiers on the other hand fought with all their might and killed as many demons as they can. The demons quickly retreated. King Ryutarou arrived and shouted, â€Å"Go after them!† The army of elites, the sorcerer, Tokumoto, and Shigori chased the demons and they all ended up in front of the portal. The portal was slowly shrinking. Shigori, Tokumoto. the sorcerer, and some of the elites got through it. He heard a voice saying, â€Å"Come to me!† and then lost his consciousness. Chapter 9 Tokumoto emerged in an area where the sky was a swirl of purple and black and the air smelled like fresh blood. He was dying to go home to see his grandfather yet he does not know where he is. Later on he realized he was in an apocalyptic world. â€Å"Hey, are you all right?† Shigori asked, â€Å"A demon hypnotized you.† Tokumoto opened his eyes and saw Shigori. â€Å"We are in a plane where demons rule. Now, look at the sky. Do you see that giant tower? That is where King Kazul lives. King Ryutarou wanted us to kill him.† Shigori explained. Shigori pointed at the sorceress. â€Å"This is Zuli. She is a master of the arcane arts.† Tokumoto and Shigori walked towards the huge tower. They found burnt trees, ashes in the air, and corpses on their way to the tower. When they reached the tower, they opened the door and went in. The tower has a long spiral staircase. They walked up the stairs. Then Tokumoto heard a voice saying, â€Å"Die.† He ignored the voice and continued climbing the stairs until he and Shigori reached the top of the tower. They found an armored King Kazul standing by his throne. â€Å"We’ll call you if you’re needed. Stay at the steps.† Zuli told the elites. â€Å"Tokumoto, I have waited such a long time for this moment. Do you remember those faint whispers? That was me talking to you. I killed your parents with the purple gas,† King Kazul said proudly. Tokumoto was astonished, â€Å"Why did you kill my parents? Why not someone kill someone else?† King Kazul replied, â€Å"I feast on the souls of the people I kill to grow ever stronger. Alas, regular souls would not satisfy me, but your parents were special. Your ancestors could travel between dimensions. They found me here, and I was almost killed. Tokumoto looked back, and saw an army of ghouls fighting the elites. Zuli was infuriated and casted a spell that froze Kazul, but he broke out of it. She then shot a fireball at Kazul. Shigori shot an arrow at the fireball, resulting in a flaming arrow that missed Kazul by inches. Kazul flew into the air with is demonic powers, materialized a sword, dove, and stabbed Zuli in the arm. She staggered to a safe area. Tokumoto charged at Kazul, and attempted to slice him. They were almost equal in strength, but Kazul was a bit stronger. Shigori carefully aimed his bow. He released his arrow, and it hit its mark. With the arrow through Kazul’s neck, he died, and the ghouls fighting the elites vaporized. Shigori’s eyes and nose appeared on his face. They had won. But the king exploded into a portal, sucking in Tokumoto. Tokumoto flew into the portal, along with wispy clouds, appearing in his grandfather’s home. â€Å"Welcome home, Tokumoto. I didn’t hear the door open. How was your trek?† his grandfather asked. â€Å"It was fun. But I wouldn’t want to do it again for a while. He never heard another unexplained whisper ever again. The claim is that we can’t move out of our current social class because capitalism doesn’t allow us to rise in class because it only makes the richer rich and the poor poorer. The poor aren’t allowed to gain the skills that can make them richer, and leaves only those in the top tier of earnings to control what the poor are learning. If you examine all governments in the past that depended upon a system that was controlled, such as Communist Russia, you see that they weren’t successful, and eventually their existence came to an end. Capitalism allows the government to be democratic, which is good for the economy of that country. Capitalism allows that country’s economy to either rise or fall. Although the fall of an economy might be detrimental, whenever a country has an increased rise in their economy, the lives of the inhabitants of that country are greatly improved. The democracy can also give people a peace of mind, knowing that they don’t have to fear their government. The free market system also allows many companies to remain in that country, because they have less market restrictions. With market restrictions, the company would move to another country where they have the free market system and would not only take away from the first country’s economy, but also discourage future businesses and corporations to invest in a controlled market economy. The view that capitalism only makes the rich richer and the poor poorer is one that is held by many and has support, such as not being able to move in social classes. Although this claim has support, the fact that we don’t have to fear the government or worry about the economy not growing is strong support for the capitalism free market system. Subject to this convention, no prisoner of war could be forced to disclose to his captor any information other than his identity (i.e., his name and rank, but not his military unit, home town, or address of relatives). Every prisoner of war was entitled to adequate food and medical care and had the right to exchange correspondence and receive parcels. He was required to observe ordinary military discipline and courtesy, but he could attempt to escape at his own risk. Once recaptured, he was not to be punished for his attempt.Officers were to receive pay either according to the pay scale of their own country or to that of their captor, whichever was less; they could not be required to work. Enlisted men might be required to work for pay, but the nature and location of their work were not to expose them to danger, and in no case could they be required to perform work directly related to military operations. Camps were to be open to inspection by authorized representatives of a neutral power.  Germany in general followed the 1929 Geneva Convention in the treatment of American and British servicemen in POW camps, with little difference to be found in treatment with Americans and British. POW‘s were not to be individually confined, and the food served them should have been equal to that served to German troops. The ration was reduced by the end of the war, but this was related to the general situation with food in Germany. Much greater problem for the POW‘s was the warm clothing, often not provided by the Germans, however the prisoners could receive acceptable clothes from th e Red Cross and from their families via the Red Cross.The prisoners were allowed to arrange recreational activities, such as sport games by their own, also some attention was paid to the religious demands of catholic and protestant POW‘s, the largest POW camps had chapels on their territory. The prisoners, involved in work received small payment (5 to 10 marks) for their effort, though the amount of money, which a POW could possess was limited. An important right for the British and American prisoners was a right to send and receive mail, although the delivery of mail was very erratic, and a letter or a parcel required several weeks to transit.American and British prisoners’ worst enemy was usually boredom. One of the most important activities which overcame this enemy was reading. The American and British peoples, through the various agencies which undertook the task of providing POWs with books, made it possible for prisoners to obtain books which were so necessary an d useful. It helped the prisoners to occupy their time and keep their mental capacity. When the American and British POWs left the prisoners of war camps, approximately 1 million books were left behind.One can notice, that the treatment of British and American POW‘s was tolerant enough, except for some cases of spontaneous violence, such as murder of USAF and RAF pilots by the German civilians, angry with their air raids. However, this human attitude was hardly applied to the prisoners from other countries, retained in Germany. Polish, Yugoslavian and especially Russian prisoners received the worst treatment ever imaginable.There were several reasons for it, and the most important of them was the notorious Nazi racial doctrine, which considered the Slaves to be Untermenschen or underhumans, almost equal to Jews. The Soviet Union was also not a party to 1929 Geneva Convention, and so could not count for Red Cross assistance. Finally, Stalin, being suspicious of everyone out of his control, proclaimed all the Russian POW‘s to be traitors and deprived them with any rights or aid.Dealing with Russian prisoners became even more complicated as the amount of captives at the first year of war reached 5 million, creating problems even with simple accommodation. Russian soldiers, captured in the great encirclements, were often left without food for weeks, causing starvation and typhus. Some categories of prisoners, such as Jews or Communist party members were usually shot immediately. The survivors were taken to the concentration camps on the territory of the Soviet Union, Poland and Germany itself.At the later period working with Russian POW‘s became more organized. Germans point now was to use the mass of people in their disposal in the most rational way. Those of the prisoners, who conformed with the racial demands (mostly originating from the Baltic or western regions of Russia) could voluntary join the Wehrmacht. Other volunteers, mostly recent ca ptives, were used as Hiwi Hilfswillige), or helpers in the army units.The fate of the others to be kept in the concentration and death camps, such as Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Dachau. Forced labour of the Russian POW‘s was actively used at the German civil an military enterprises, including aircraft factories and V-2 rockets production.  Another way of exploiting the Untermenschen was to use them for medical and military experiments. For example, 600 Soviet prisoners were gassed in Auschwitz on 3 September 1941 at the first experiment with ZyklonB.  Based on the overstated one can make a conclusion, that treatment of the American and British POW‘s, captured by the Germans was surely   preferable to the treatment of other POW‘s. Feminist theory is a major branch within sociology that shifts its assumptions, analytic lens, and topical focus away from the male viewpoint and experience and toward that of women. In doing so, feminist theory shines a light on social problems, trends, and issues that are otherwise overlooked or misidentified by the historically dominant male perspective within social theory. That said, since the experiences and perspectives of women and girls were historically excluded from social theory and social science, much feminist theory has focused on their interactions and experiences within society to ensure that half the worlds population is not left out of how we see and understand social forces, relations, and problems. While most  feminist theorists throughout history have been women, today people of all genders can be found working in the discipline. By shifting the focus of social theory away from the perspectives and experiences of men, feminist theorists have created social theories that are more inclusive and creative than those that assume the social actor to always be a man. Part of what makes feminist theory creative and inclusive is that it often considers how systems of power and oppression interact, which is to say it does not just focus on gendered power and oppression, but on how it might intersect  with systemic racism, a hierarchical class system, sexuality, nationality, and (dis)ability, among other things. Gender  Differences Some feminist theory provides an analytic framework for understanding how womens location in, and experience of, social situations differ from mens. For example, cultural feminists look at the different values associated with womanhood and femininity as a reason why men and women experience the social world differently. Other feminist theorists believe that the different roles assigned to women and men within institutions better explain gender difference, including the sexual division of labor in the household. Existential and phenomenological feminists focus on how women have been marginalized and defined as  Ã¢â‚¬Å"other†Ã‚  in patriarchal societies. Some feminist theorists focus specifically on how masculinity is developed through socialization, and how its development interacts with the process of developing femininity in girls. Gender Inequality Feminist theories that focus on gender inequality recognize that womens location in, and experience of, social situations are not only different but also unequal to mens. Liberal feminists argue that women have the same capacity as men for moral reasoning and agency, but that patriarchy, particularly the sexist division of labor, has historically denied women the opportunity to express and practice this reasoning. These dynamics serve to shove women into the  private sphere  of the household and to exclude them from full participation in public life. Liberal feminists point out that gender inequality exists for women in a heterosexual marriage and that women do not benefit from being married. Indeed, these feminist theorists claim, married women have higher levels of stress than unmarried women and married men. Therefore, the sexual division of labor in both the public and private spheres needs to be altered for women to achieve equality in marriage. Gender Oppression Theories of gender oppression go further than theories of gender difference and gender inequality by arguing that not only are women different from or unequal to men, but that they are actively oppressed, subordinated, and even abused by men. Power is the key variable in the two main theories of gender oppression: psychoanalytic feminism and  radical feminism. Psychoanalytic feminists attempt to explain power relations between men and women by reformulating Sigmund Freuds theories of human emotions, childhood development, and the workings of the subconscious and unconscious. They believe that conscious calculation cannot fully explain the production and reproduction of patriarchy. Radical feminists  argue that being a woman is a positive thing in and of itself, but that this is not acknowledged in  patriarchal societies  where women are oppressed. They identify  physical violence  as being at the base of  patriarchy, but they think that patriarchy can be defeated if women recognize their own value and strength, establish a sisterhood of trust with other women, confront oppression critically, and form female-based separatist networks in the private and public spheres. Structural Oppression Structural oppression theories posit that womens oppression and inequality are a result of capitalism, patriarchy, and racism. Socialist feminists agree with  Karl Marx  and Freidrich Engels that the working class is exploited as a consequence of capitalism, but they seek to extend this exploitation not just to class but also to gender. Intersectionality theorists seek to explain oppression and inequality across a variety of variables, including class, gender, race, ethnicity, and age. They offer the important insight that not all women experience oppression in the same way, and that the same forces that work to oppress women and girls also oppress people of color and other marginalized groups. One way structural oppression  of women, specifically the economic kind, manifests in society is in the gender wage gap, which shows that men routinely earn more for the same work than  women. An intersectional view of this situation shows that women of color, and men of color, too, are even further penalized relative to the earnings of white men. In the late 20th century, this strain of feminist theory was extended to account for the globalization of capitalism and how its methods of production and of accumulating wealth center on the exploitation of women workers around the world.
